That kind of thing can happen when your comptroller is 84! He's too senile to remember that women can vote now.
A friend of mine told me this story once about a reporter who asked Schaefer a question this way: "My desk wants me to ask you ..." The then-gov leaned down toward his desk, turned his head to the side, and then said to the reporter, "My desk tells your desk to go f''' itself!"
Quite a character, but a little TOO irascible for my taste, even.
